Animation is the rapid display of a sequence of images of 2-D or 3-D artwork or model positions in order to create an illusion of movement.
For example a ball moving up and down would consist of 6 frames to make the ball move.
To create a moving animation you either draw something moving a cm at a time and take a picture of each difference or make flick book. Or you either have a model drawn out on computer or have a real life object moving it cm by cm and take a picture of the difference.
